Afghanistan, Pakistan Included In U.A.E.’s New Visa Ban

Afghans from Loya Paktia traveling to Iran. Under the new ban, applications for new employment and visit visas have been suspended for 13 mostly Muslim countries.

The United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.) has stopped issuing new visas to citizens of 13 mostly Muslim-majority countries, including Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iran, according to a document issued by a state-owned business park. The document, which was sent to companies operating in the park and was seen by Reuters, cited an immigration circular that came into effect on November 18.

It said applications for new employment and visit visas had been suspended for nationals who are outside the U.A.E. from the 13 countries, including Syria, Libya, and Yemen, until further notice. The visa ban also applies to citizens of Somalia, Algeria, Kenya, Iraq, Lebanon, Tunisia, and Turkey, the document says. It was not clear if there were any exceptions to the ban. The U.A.E.’s Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship had no immediate comment when contacted by Reuters.

A source briefed on the matter told Reuters the U.A.E. had temporarily stopped issuing new visas to Afghans, Pakistanis, and citizens of several other countries over security concerns. The source did not say what those concerns were but said the visa ban was expected to last for a short period. Last week, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said the U.A.E. had stopped processing new visas for its citizens and those of some other countries. It said it was seeking information from the U.A.E. on the reason for the suspension but that it thought it was related to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

The Pakistani ministry and the source said those holding valid visas were not affected by the new restrictions and could enter the U.A.E.

UAE suspends entry of passengers from Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka

Mon 10/5/2021

The General Civil Aviation Authority

(GCAA) and the National Emergency, Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA) have announced that entry from Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka will be suspended for all incoming passengers on national and foreign carriers, as well as those carrying transit passengers, starting from 23:59 on Wednesday, 12th May, 2021.

The decision exempts transit flights coming to the UAE and heading towards these countries. This decision is applicable to the entry of travellers who were in Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka in the last 14 days before coming to the UAE.

Flights between these countries and the UAE will continue to operate, allowing the transportation of passengers from the UAE to those countries. It will also allow the transfer of some exempted groups from the four aforementioned countries to the UAE, with strict enforcement of precautionary measures.

These groups include UAE citizens, diplomats appointed by the UAE in these countries, official delegations, businessmen’s chartered flights, and those holding golden residency visa, provided that they undertake preventive measures that include quarantine for 10 days and a PCR test at the airport, as well as on the fourth and eighth days following the entry into the country.

Moreover, the validity of PCR test period has been reduced from 72 hours to 48 hours prior to travel from accredited laboratories that issue test results carrying a QR code.

The authority also confirmed that it is required for those coming from Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka through other countries to stay in those countries for at least 14 days before being allowed to enter the UAE. Cargo flights will continue to operate between the UAE and these countries.

The authority called upon all travellers affected by the decision to follow up with the relevant airlines to change or reschedule their flights and to ensure their safe return to their final destinations without delay.

Why the countries affected?
The United Arab Emirates has reportedly banned nationals of some 20 African countries from entering its capital city, Dubai.
“This is to inform you that we will not be posting 30 days visa applications for these nationalities effective today October 18, 2022,” the notice read in part. In a notice issued to trade partners including travel agents, authorities indicated that all applications should be rejected.

“Any applications from the above-mentioned countries will be sent back or canceled.” According to reports. This is not the first time some African countries have been banned from entering Dubai.
In December 2021, Emirates Airlines announced that eight African countries will not be accepted to travel through Dubai until further notice due to the spread of Covid 19.
It is however not clear the reason behind the latest ban.
